Music Software

by admin on Aug.24, 2010, under Hardware

music-software2In the movie, “Mr. Holland’s Opus”, the inspirational music teacher played by Richard Dreyfus says, “You can’t teach (the students) English and math…if you don’t teach them music…”

Some studies claim that learning music for children stimulates spatial intelligence (math and science) and influences IQ tests. Will your child’s SAT scores be affected if your he or she learns to play music? Although I’ve seen a link between music and my daughter’s math and science aptitude, my thoughts are that all kids are different and not all kids are musically inclined even if exposed to music at an early age. Stefanie, age 12, plays the violin and piano and is a straight A’s student in a middle school. Coincidence or not, here are some of my favorite music software programs for the whole family!

Danny Glover Tells Aesop’s Fables

by admin on Aug.13, 2010, under News & reviews

aesopAlthough Danny Glover Tells Aesop’s Fables introduction starts off with solid animation and music, the kids quickly realize that the 24 Aesop’s fables, narrated by actor Danny Glover, are not animations, but rather of series of static images. It reminded me of being in elementary school and watching slide shows in the middle of the day. It would have been nice for the kids to view a more entertaining animated version of Aesop’s than a series of images. Also, Jazz maestro Ron Carter’s musical backdrops detracted from Glover’s concise narration. It was very easy for our kids to lose interest in the middle of a fable. This rarely happens with CD-ROMs in our household! Why not check out a book at the local library and introduce the kids to your favorite Aesop’s Fables or let them read Aesop’s to you instead of tying up a $2,000 computer watching slide shows? You can’t help but fall in love with Tracker, the talking dog, and the down-home musical opening. The age-old theme is one most children can probably relate to. Kiddies convince Mom to bring home a new puppy but everyone’s out of the house and pup decides to turn the house upside down and redecorate! It’s up to your kids to get the house back in shape! Luckily, these aren’t the same gooey stickers that some kids (I’m not naming names) love to stick on the walls!

If your kids enjoyed Millie, Bailey, Sammy and Trudy (some of Ed-mark’s most lovable animated characters), just wait until they meet the new kid on the block, Stanley! Kid-tested tools, jumbo-sized buttons and spoken help make this software easy to use for per-readers and readers alike.

Stanley is a bright and friendly sea otter who is always ready to help kids play and learn as they weave their own interactive tales while customizing them with stickers, backgrounds, animation, sound effects, music and their own voices. (continue reading…)
