Perfect Attendance Isn’t Perfect

by admin on Sep.08, 2010, under Kindergarten

perfect-attendance-isnt-perfectIf your kids get hurt on the school playground or get sick in the classroom, how confident are you that they’ll be in good hands? Similar to “mis-managed” care, it seems that some schools are more concerned about perfect attendance records than treating playground/classroom injuries and illnesses.

For instance, my 3rd grader got a paper cut in art class and asked to go to the school’s nurse. The cut was bleeding and infection is a concern. We’ve taught our son that paper cuts left untreated may turn into serious problems like necrotizing (flesh eating) bacteria or other staph (or strep) infections. (continue reading…)

Great American Websites: An Online Discovery of a Hidden America

by admin on Sep.07, 2010, under Hardware

great-americanWhen Charles Kuralt died recently, an era ended. Great American Websites, which takes a path similar to Kuralt’s, encourages you to go on the road in the greatest all-American tour of the World Wide Web. You’ll visit the obscure–and the not so obscure. Best of all, exploring America’s past, present, and future has never been easier. Great American Websites is an excellent resource for students and teachers, history buffs and those yearning to learn about culture in the United States. It would make a great addition to any classroom (grades 5-12) and a wonderful resource for teachers looking for ways to integrate technology into their lesson plans. (continue reading…)

american-heritage-childrensMultimedia dictionary, loaded with games, activities and content, gives kids fun-filled glimpse at words and English language!

Do you ever get the feeling that your students use the same words over and over again? Are there certain words your child finds hard to pronounce? Do your students grasp the real definition of words they read? Instead of dragging out any dictionary, try a classic multimedia dictionary for kids ages 7-12, and you may be surprised at the results!

American Heritage Children’s Dictionary can be used just like a conventional dictionary. Aside from the obvious difference (it takes less space in your classroom or home bookshelf because it’s a CD-ROM!), the greatest benefit to using this multimedia dictionary is the fun factor! The Amazon Trail 3rd Edition

by admin on Sep.03, 2010, under 3D Games

the-amazon-trail-3rd-edition-rainforestI’ll admit it. I’m a sucker for software about rainforests. The Amazon Trail 3rd Edition: Rainforest Adventures is a big improvement over earlier editions. In fact, the 3D graphics are so realistic, I started feeling seasick navigating the canoe on the mighty Amazon River in search for secrets. Then again, I always get seasick!

Taking photos of exotic plants and animals is a breeze, however! Catching fish with harpoons is an activity that most kids enjoy–however, it’s not all fun and games. They’ll need to look up the fish species in the guidebook to determine if the fish is edible. (continue reading…)

Hip and sleek two-way radios are the Talk About town!!

by admin on Aug.29, 2010, under 3D Games

hip-and-sleek-two-way-radios-are-they-talk-about-townWatching kids use Motorola’s new Talk About SLK Two-Way Radios reminded me of the fun I had years ago with Citizen-Band (CB) Radios! Not only can you communicate (clearly) with your best buds, you can eavesdrop on other conversations and join in. How totally cool!

Unlike the big and bulky CB radios of the past or the boring-looking rectangular black walkie-talkies common to most geeky neighborhood kids, the TalkAbout SLKs are in a league of their own. Although, it’s obvious times have changed. (continue reading…)

preschool-softwareGetting your child ready for preschool is a picnic with these fun-filled educational CD-ROMs aimed at young learners.

Is your child ready for preschool? It’s summer and time to check out my favorite preschool CD-ROMs which teach kids that preschool learning is loads of fun!

Teach your kids (ages 3 through 6 years) the letters of the alphabet with award-winning software, “Alphabet Express”. This zany software, with its high-quality animation and exciting activities, reminds me of the PBS show,”Sesame Street”, with an interactive twist! Kids board the “Alphabet Express” train and find that each letter of the alphabet has its very own destination of activities to explore. (continue reading…)

by admin on May.12, 2010, under Hardware

monorail-133Way cool, innovative and inexpensive — this PC’s for you!

What can you get for $999 in a home PC? Plenty! If you’re looking for a high-performance multimedia computer which saves you space and money, look no farther than Monorail’s systems. I tested the Monorail 133 and was impressed by its slim design and price tag. It’s innovative–a desktop PC that only weighs 17 lbs. with a full-size keyboard. It easily fits into tiny work areas, kitchens, cubicles, apartments and student dorms while taking about 20 percent of the space of a traditional desktop PC. Better yet, a PC that can peacefully exist next to a Power Mac so that you can simultaneously run both platforms. It’s a damn near perfect setup. (continue reading…)
